Recently I had a conversation with an old friend and she mentioned she recently had taken Reiki level one training. I thought this was great as many people are awaking or becoming aware of the benefits of energy healing. There are many different energy healing modalities available. Reiki is just one of them. I personally have experienced and enjoyed Reiki myself. I have been trained in Reiki and have used it on family. I have dabbled in other energy healing modalities as well. Some of which I talk about in my book, “Seeds 4 Change: A Path to Health and Healing”.
For now though, let’s take a look at Reiki. What is Reiki? According to the International Center for Reiki Training, Reiki is “a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy”.
Reiki is a form of energy healing. It is a spiritual system in which the Reiki practitioner places their hands in various positions over a body of their client so they can channel energy. Proponents believe that the practice is beneficial in treating the whole person including the mind, body, and soul. Reiki healing gives people the opportunity to unleash the energy flow that is within them by following certain steps to control the energy flow. The purpose of this practice is to strengthen a person’s physical and mental well-being. It promotes relaxation and stress reduction.
Since energy surrounds the body and forms within it, a Reiki practitioner will work to direct that energy as a way to promote an environment for healing through the hands. An average session seems like a massage, but it serves a more spiritual purpose. Often times the Reiki practitioner’s hands will never touch a client’s body. The palms will hover over the body and remain within the client’s auric field. It is believed that if you can help clear the negative forces within the client’s energy field, one can set the stage for self healing. It is felt that illness results from underlying emotional blocks disrupting one’s energy field.
Reiki healing helps to manipulate the energy that flows within and outside of the body. Certain steps are taken to control this energy that contributes to the collective body, mind, and soul. The goal is to restore an individual’s physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Staying within an individual’s energy field is the main way to provide therapy. A physical or mental disorder is believed to result from a disturbance in that field, so a session should involve trying to even out the aura.
Some healthcare institutions actually offer Reiki sessions to their patients. What a wonderful thing to offer someone under a time of great stress. It is know that stress is at the root of all illness. By promoting an environment of calm and relaxation one can start to heal.
There are other energy healing modalities available as well. Some of these include Healing Touch, Theta Healing, and Quantum Touch Healing. All are safe and noninvasive. All help to promote relaxation and healing. I would not say one is better than the other. Find one that resonates with you and add it to your health promotion and healing tool box.
