As you likely know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.  My guess is you know someone who has been impacted by breast cancer or maybe you have had it yourself.  So for the next couple of weeks I will be sharing some important information with you on breast cancer awareness and prevention.

To start off let’s talk about estrogen dominance. You may have heard the term estrogen dominance used loosely in magazines and conversations… but what is it, exactly?

Estrogen dominance is one of the most common hormonal imbalances women experience today.

In fact, it is so common, that we assume that feeling PMS, being menopausal and having fibroids is pretty normal. Many women are struggling with estrogen dominance but they don’t even know it.  I am always flabbergasted as to why a woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer has not been advised to have her hormone and vitamin D levels checked.

Research has shown that women who have breast cancer with optimal levels of vitamin D have better outcomes then women who don’t.  When I have a woman come to me that has breast cancer, I always ask, has your vitamin D level been checked and the answer is always no.  So I check it and guess what?  It is always low.  This is one simple test that I think everyone should have whether you have breast cancer or not.  Optimizing your Vitamin D is very protective to your overall health.

When it comes to checking your hormones, this is another area where we can be proactive.  I have also checked these same women’s hormone levels and they often will have estrogen dominance.  There are things we can do to help this. My preferred method of checking hormones today is a dried urine test for comprehensive hormones or DUTCH Test. Using this test we can actually see how you are breaking down or metabolizing your hormones.  If you have estrogen dominance, the last thing I am going to do is give you hormones.  Rather we are going to want to support the healthy metabolism of your hormones.

Here are 17 symptoms that may indicate the presence of estrogen dominance:

  1. PMS, PMDD and dysmenorrhea
  2. Fibrocystic or lumpy breasts
  3. Fibroids
  4. Endometriosis
  5. Heavy periods (menorrhagia)
  6. Lack of periods (amenorrea)
  7. Hip fat and cellulite (no matter how much you exercise)
  8. Thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer
  9. History of ER+ breast cancer
  10. Irritability, mood swings
  11. Depression and/or anxiety
  12. Headaches or migraines, particularly before your period
  13. Bloating, puffiness, or water retention
  14. Gallbladder problems, or your gallbladder has been removed
  15. Brown facial discoloration (melasma)
