Discover the Eight Roots to Disease and the Steps you Can Take to Avoid Them

Every day in my practice, as a nurse practitioner, I see so many people that are suffering from fatigue, depression, joint pain, weight gain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, autoimmune disease, and various other maladies. Often times they have been to see multiple doctors with no answers. Sadly, I often hear patients say they feel like they are not being listened to or they get the following responses: you are depressed, exercise more and eat less.  They don’t feel their concerns are being heard and no one is looking for the root cause. Often times you are given less than 5 minutes to voice your concerns. Is this how you feel… Read More

Four Ailments in Which Herbal Remedies are Commonly Used

Before there were pills, powders, syrups and injections, there were poultices, pastes, salves, oils and potions supplied to those who needed them. Herbal remedies make use of nature’s bounty to either prevent disease and ailments or to even help cure them. Their history is rooted in ancient medical practices. Most herbs are sold today as herbal supplements and are available nearly everywhere.  Even in the age of modern medicine, over three quarters of the world’s population use herbal remedies in one form or another. Because many herbs produce effects similar to prescription drugs, it is recommended that any herbal remedies used or supplements taken be revealed to your healthcare provider in order… Read More

What is Kefir?

Have you heard of Kefir and its reported health benefits? I have to admit, until recently, I did not have a clear understanding of what Kefir was, other than I knew it contained beneficial bacteria. Kefir is made from fermented milk with Kefir grains or a bacterial/yeast fermentation starter. It originated in the Caucasus Mountains around 3,000 BC. The fermented Kefir contains a mixture of good bacteria and yeast cultures. Commonly found good bacteria contained within Kefir includes Lactobacillus caucasius, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces Kefir. Kefir can be made from cow’s milk, goat’s milk, coconut milk, and almond milk. So if you are lactose intolerant you have several options available. All of which contain probiotic benefits. However during… Read More

Could parasites be what are bugging your gut?

There is this misconception in the medical community that unless you have traveled outside of the United States you likely don’t have parasites.  Could the cause of your abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, itching, rash, headaches, fever, muscle aches, allergies or asthma symptoms be due to parasites?  If very well could be. Generally these symptoms are present for years.  I have often been questioned for ordering ova and parasite testing.  Nearly every time I order this testing from the local lab I get a call asking me if the patient had recently traveled outside the country.  Usually your local labs can’t find hidden parasites as their tests are not… Read More

What do you think about the Affordable Care Act?

Now more than ever it is important that you take responsibility for your health. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is upon us.Many concerns exist about what this means for you and me. It is believed that the ACA is going to drive up healthcare costs for the consumer who is currently covered by an employer sponsored healthcare plan. Health insurance carriers will be required to cover employers’ employees regardless of pre-existing conditions. This cost will be passed on to the consumer through higher insurance premiums and taxes. We all will pay. It is believed that the ultimate goal is to force everyone into universal healthcare. There is concern that people will not be able to afford the… Read More

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Epidemic

Did you know that you or a family member may silently have fatty liver disease? It is a national epidemic not only in adults, but in children as well. Obesity and poor diet are known contributors to this condition. It is believed that as many as 20% of adults and sadly 6 million children have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This not only increases your risk of developing cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer, it also increases your risk of heart disease as well. So what exactly is NAFLD? It is an excess deposit of fat and scarring within the liver. This contributes to oxidative stress and inflammation. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease can be silent with… Read More

Could this simple vitamin be the missing link in hard to treat depression?

If you are one of the many people who suffer from depression or are a clinician that treats depression, you know how hard this can be to treat effectively. More than 70% of those treated for depression do not feel they are getting significant symptom relief. There are many things that contribute to depression. Stressful and traumatic life events, poor diet, lack of sleep, and genetics are all known risks factors for depression. If you seek help from your health care provider, you will often be offered an antidepressant medication and if that does not work another one will be tried or a combination of antidepressants. Was the recent study on fish oil and its link to prostate cancer misleading?

Did you hear about the recent study completed at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, Washington and published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute that suggested a link between taking high doses of omega-3 fish oil and prostate cancer? If you did, I am sure you were alarmed. I know I was as this is one supplement I have recommended to many people in the name of good health. Should all women and men be taking DIM supplements?

First of all, what is DIM or diindolylmethane? Now you know why they call it DIM for short. DIM supplements are composed of a natural compound that forms from the digestion and breakdown of indole-3-carbinole (I3C) found in vegetables containing glucobrassicin. These are commonly known as cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, kale, cabbage, brussel sprouts, and broccoli. Now you would need to eat significant quantities of these cruciferous vegetables to obtain the health benefits seen in studies. DIM is believed to have potential cancer fighting properties. The National Cancer Institute’s own definition states that DIM supplements have potential antiandrogenic and antineoplastic activity. The reported mechanism of action responsible for the protective benefits has to do with how… Read More
